κανθύλη
Appearance
Ancient Greek
[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]- κονθηλαί (konthēlaí)
Etymology
[edit]The comparison with Proto-Germanic *gundaz (“sore, boil; pus”) would require that κονθηλαί (konthēlaí) is original, which is highly unlikely. Strömberg derives the word from κάνθων (kánthōn) and κανθήλιος (kanthḗlios), both meaning pack ass. The variation α/ο is clearly Pre-Greek, as is the suffix.
