κάπηλος
Appearance
Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Beekes finds improbable a derivation from κάπη (kápē, “crib, manger”). Probably related to Latin caupō (“innkeeper”); as the Greek could be from Pre-Greek, this would render the Latin a substrate borrowing, as well. Furnee additionally compares Hittite 𒄩𒀊𒉺𒅈 (ḫappar, “purchase, price”).[1]
