θρῶναξ

Ancient Greek

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Traditionally derived from Proto-Indo-European *dʰrēn- (drone; to murmur), like English drone and Latin drensō (to cry (of swans)). However, Beekes suggests a Pre-Greek origin, comparing the word with ἀνθρηδών (anthrēdṓn, hornet), ἀνθρήνη (anthrḗnē, bee, wasp) and τενθρηδών (tenthrēdṓn, kind of wasp).
