Etymology

[edit]

According to Beekes and Chantraine, probably from Pre-Greek.[1] Older theories link the word to εἴρω (eírō, to fasten together) or εἴρω (eírō, to speak, say) (compare ῥήτρα (rhḗtra, verbal agreement, treaty)).
