[edit]Etymology
[edit]The word shows some resemblance to Latvian dupêtiês (“dead sound”) and Serbo-Croatian dűpiti (“to slay”), but the initial γδ- found in some compounds suggests a Pre-Greek origin. Compare Proto-Indo-European *(s)tewp-.
