Etymology
[edit]The adjective goes back to *δί-κροϝ-ος (*dí-krow-os), from δῐ- (dĭ-) + a word for "horn". Nussbaum assumes that there were forms without laryngeal, like Sanskrit शृङ्ग (śṛṅga, “horn, tusk”) and κάρνος (kárnos, “cattle”), to explain the discrepancy between this word and κέρας (kéras, “horn”).
