[edit]From Proto-Hellenic *génetōr, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵénh₁tōr, from *ǵenh₁- (“to produce, to give birth”) + *-tōr (agent noun), equivalent to γίγνομαι (gígnomai, “to be born”) + -τωρ (-tōr, masculine agent noun suffix). Compare Latin genitor.
