[edit]From an unattested verb *βίβημι (*bíbēmi), from Proto-Hellenic *gʷígʷāmi, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷígʷeh₂ti, from *gʷeh₂- (“to step”) (whence ἔβην (ébēn)).
