Uncertain. Perhaps from Aramaic אמר בטלתא, or from Βάττος (Báttos, “Battus, stuttering king of Cyrene”), or possibly onomatopoeic + λογέω (logéō). Compare Latin butubatta.

     Proseukhómenoi dè mḕ battalogḗsēte hṓsper hoi ethnikoí, dokoûsin gàr hóti en têi polulogíāi autôn eisakousthḗsontai.
