From Proto-Iranian *āgádakah, from *āgádati +‎ *-akah, from *aH- +‎ *gádati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gʰádʰati, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰédʰ-e-ti, from *gʷʰedʰ- (to ask, wish) +‎ *-ti. Cognate with Sogdian 𐼀𐼀𐼄𐼌𐼀𐼋 (ʾʾɣδʾk /⁠āɣaδē⁠/), Parthian 𐫀𐫃𐫀𐫅𐫃 (ʾgʾdg /⁠āɣāδag⁠/).
