[edit]Possibly borrowed from Hittite 𒈪𒄿𒋫𒀸 (mītaš, “reddish”),[1] from Proto-Indo-European *(s)meh₁y- (“to mince, to twist”). Compare the cognates listed at Proto-Slavic *mědь (“copper”).
