[edit]˿
- (UPA) A click consonant and possibly also implosive consonants (defined only as consonants "which are formed by sucking air into the oral cavity").
Usage notes
[edit]This is a modifier letter that combines with a voiceless, voiced or nasal letter of the appropriate place of articulation, e.g.:
- p˿ b˿ m˿ (bilabial clicks)
- t˿ d˿ n˿ (dental clicks)
- ṭ˿ ḍ˿ ṇ˿ (alveolar clicks)
- k˿ g˿ ŋ˿ ("velar" clicks – as with the old IPA letter ⟨ʞ⟩, these are possibly palatal clicks (current IPA ⟨ǂ⟩).)
Possibly to distinguish clicks from implosives, starting in the 1970s the Greek letters π τ κ were also defined as (voiced) clicks, with small-capital versions as voiceless clicks.
