Usage notes

[edit]

(tone): The mark is placed before the word or syllable that bears the tone. This symbol is effectively obsolete, having been replaced by Chao tone letters and tone diacritics.

(retraction): More recently, the diacritic tends to be placed above the letter with a descender. See ◌̠.
