Etymology
[edit]From earlier [Book Pahlavi needed] (*ʾwytplyt), ecclesiastical borrowing from Zoroastrian Avestan *𐬎𐬱𐬙𐬋𐬟𐬭𐬌𐬙𐬌 (*uštōfriti) (compare Avestan 𐬎𐬯𐬆𐬟𐬭𐬌𐬙𐬌 (usəfriti, “offered, oblated”)), from 𐬎𐬱𐬙𐬀 (ušta), perfective participle of 𐬬𐬀𐬯 (vas, “to want, wish”) + 𐬟𐬭𐬌𐬙𐬌 (friti, “prayer”).[1]
