[edit]From Proto-Polynesian *kava-pusi (compare with Samoan 'avapuhi and Maori kōpī (“Corynocarpus laevigatus”))[1][2][3] from Proto-Polynesian *kawa. Doublet of ʻawa, ʻawaʻawa, and ʻōpuhi.
