From Proto-Mon-Khmer *skaamʔ (Shorto). Cognate with Bolyu qam⁵³, Pacoh acam, Mon ကာံ (kam), Riang kʰɑm¹, Vietnamese cám. For the loss of earlier *k(ʰ)-, see ʔaː¹.
