żeblaħ
Appearance
Maltese
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from a dialectal Arabic زَبْلَحَ (zablaḥa). The sense varies somewhat, but appears to be related to idle or dishonest talk. Possibly related with żżagħbel and Arabic خُزَعْبَلة (ḵuzaʕbala, “made-up and ridiculous story, palaver”). Or perhaps an extended form of the root ز ب ل (z b l); compare Maltese żibel (“dung, waste”).
