Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from a dialectal Arabic زَبْلَحَ (zablaḥa). The sense varies somewhat, but appears to be related to idle or dishonest talk. Possibly related with żżagħbel and Arabic خُزَعْبَلة (ḵuzaʕbala, made-up and ridiculous story, palaver). Or perhaps an extended form of the root ز ب ل (z-b-l); compare Maltese żibel (dung, waste).
