[edit]Cognate with Upper Sorbian dźowćo, Polish dziewczę, Czech děvče, Old Church Slavonic дѣвица (děvica), Russian деви́ца (devíca), Serbo-Croatian d(j)evojka; ultimately from Proto-Slavic *děva (“virgin”). See also źowka (“daughter”).
