Inherited from Old Polish świętopietrze. By surface analysis, święty +‎ -o- +‎ Piotr +‎ -e. Named after founder of the Catholic Church Saint Peter. The name comes from the fact that the tribute was usually collected on the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul on June 29.
