łichxííʼ
Appearance
Navajo
[edit]Etymology
[edit]łi- (adjectival) + -∅- (ni-modal 3rd person subject prefix) + -∅- (classifier) + -chííʼ (neuter imperfective stem of root -CHIIʼ, “to be red”), with emphatic infix -x-.
The łi- prefix appears to have originated historically from the -ł- classifier. When this prefix appears immediately in pre-stem position, it takes the shape of a l- classifier.
Pronunciation
[edit]Verb
[edit]łichxííʼ
- he/she/it is orange (color)
- Díí chʼilátah baa hózhónii éí łichxííʼ.
- This flower is orange.
Usage notes
[edit]This is a neuter verb that only uses the imperfective stem.
Łichxííʼ is on the redder side of orange, as compared to łitsxooí or yéego łitso on the yellower side of orange.
