Etymology 1

[edit]

In the original sense “to be born, develop” from Arabic خُلِقَ (ḵuliqa), passive of خَلَقَ (ḵalaqa). This passive form has also survived in most modern Arabic dialects. In Maltese, however, it has now been reinterpreted as a mere byform of the active.
