From Proto-Tocharian *ākru, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éḱru < *dáḱru < *dr̥ḱ-h₂eḱru- (eye bitter)). Cognates include Tocharian B akrūna, Sanskrit अश्रु (áśru), Avestan 𐬀𐬯𐬭𐬏 (asrū), Lithuanian ãšara, Latvian asara. Compare Tocharian B akrūna.
