From Proto-West Germanic *þingōn, from Proto-Germanic *þingōną, from *þingą (matter, issue). Cognate with Old Frisian thingia (West Frisian tingje), Old Saxon thingōn, Middle Dutch dingen (Dutch dingen), Old High German dingōn (German dingen), Old Norse þinga (Swedish tinga).
