From Proto-Norse *ᚦᛖᚢᛒᚨᛉ (*þeubaʀ) (attested in ᛗᚨᚱᛁᚦᛖᚢᛒᚨᛉ (mariþeubaʀ)), from Proto-Germanic *þeubaz. Cognate with Old Swedish þiūver, Old Danish þiūfær, Old Norse þjófr.
