[edit]Inherited from Ottoman Turkish اسطوانه, استوانه, from Arabic أسطوانة, from Aramaic אִיסְטְוָונָא (ʾesṭwānā, “column, pillar”) ultimately from Middle Persian [script needed] (stwn' /stūn/, “column, pillar”). Doublet of sütun, derived from New Persian.
