Inherited from Ottoman Turkish اسطوانه, استوانه, from Arabic أسطوانة, from Aramaic אִיסְטְוָונָא (ʾesṭwānā, column, pillar) ultimately from Middle Persian [script needed] (stwn' /⁠stūn⁠/, column, pillar). Doublet of sütun, derived from New Persian.
