From Ottoman Turkish اورتمك (örtmek, to cover, wrap, veil, shut), from Proto-Turkic *ört- (to cover).[1]

Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (ört-, to cover), Azerbaijani örtmək (to cover, shut), Chuvash витме (vitme, to cover, protect, close), Turkmen örtmek (to cover).
