[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Ottoman Turkish اوكسز (öksüz, “orphan”), from Proto-Turkic *ögsiŕ (“1. orphan, motherless child 2. mindless, dumb”). Originally a compound equivalent to ök (breast, chest, mother by metonymy) + -süz (“without, -less”) but ök has become obsolete in isolation. Cognate with Kumyk оьксюз (öksüz).
