Etymology

From Old Swedish ø̄þa, from Old Norse eyða, from Proto-Germanic *auþijaną. Cognate with Icelandic eyða, Danish øde, German veröden. Based on the adjective öde (waste, desolate) from Old Swedish ø̄þe = Danish øde, Old Saxon ôthi, Old High German ôdi (empty), Old Norse auðr (desolate).

  1. to waste, to spend in vain, often used about time
    Miljoner ödades på en renovering som inte ens har kommit i gång.
    Millions were spent on a renovation that hasn't even started.
    Åtta krigsskepp öddes, och stort var talet av fallna;
    Eight war ships were destroyed, and huge was the number of fallen (men);
