Pronunciation

[edit]

Noun

[edit]

ödü'ya

  1. The meaning of this term is uncertain. Possibilities include:
    1. first-person possessed form of jadaanü
    2. first-person possessed form of jadui
    3. first-person possessed form of jai
    4. first-person possessed form of jaimedü

Usage notes

[edit]

The Portal Japiim: Dicionário Ye'kwana defines this term simply as ‘minha prima’ (‘my female cousin’), but it is unclear what relations it actually specifically refers to; Ye’kwana kinship terms for parallel cousins are identical to those for siblings, so such a definition without any mention of siblings would seem unlikely. However, the term is clearly related to the first-person possessed form ödümö of jadui (younger sister or female parallel cousin), and the first-person possessed form ödüya'kö of jadaanü (daughter-in-law) is apparently the diminutive of this term and so the two may share meanings.
