Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from a South Slavic language, ultimately derived from Proto-Slavic *čudo (miracle, wonder). Compare Serbo-Croatian čudo (miracle, wonder) and Bulgarian чудо (čudo, miracle); compare also Romanian ciudă (fury, grudge, envy), Hungarian csoda (miracle, wonder). Initially rendered as çudë, while çudi is a back formation from the verb çudit (to surprise), itself derived from Proto-Slavic *čuditi (to be surprised).[1][2][3]
