Etymology

Inherited from Middle High German ulloch, ullouch, from Old High German ullouh, contraction of unilouh, from Proto-West Germanic *unnjalauk; equivalent to Önn +‎ Looch, both of which originally meant “onion” in the dialects.

Compare for the former Dutch ui (onion), for the latter German Lauch (leek).
