[edit]Derived from Middle Dutch Oyen, from the dative plural of ooi, oo (“low-lying pasture near water”),[1] ultimately from Proto-Germanic *agw(i)jô- (“belonging to the water”), from *ahwō (“water”),[2] from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ékʷeh₂. Compare Dutch Aijen.
