Etymology

Originally a causative form of zīst (to suckle), like its rarer but more regularly formed synonym zīdināt.[1]

zīdīt (transitive, 3rd conjugation, present zīdu, zīdi, zīda, past zīdīju)

  1. to nurse, to breastfeed (to feed (a child, a baby) with one's own milk)
    viņai bija pilnas, piebriedušas krūtis, jo tā zīdīja bērnushe had full, swollen breasts, because she was nursing a child
  2. to nurse, to suckle (the same, for animals)
    cūka bija paēdusi un zīdīja sivēnusthe sow had eaten and was (now) nursing (her) piglets
