From Malay tangsi (barracks), probably from Hokkien 團舍团舍, compound of (thn̂g, regiment; corps) +‎ (sià, lodging place) or 董事 (táng-sī, “director”). (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.).
