- From Sanskrit साधन (sādhana, “leading straight to a goal; bringing about, carrying out; acquisition; preparation”)
- From Sanskrit सन्धान (sandhāna, “bond; union; alliance; preparation”)
- From Sanskrit विधान (vidhāna, “rule, regulation; fate, accomplishment”).
Compare Ilocano sagana, Kapampangan tagana, Cebuano tagana, Hiligaynon tigana, Waray-Waray tagana, and Tausug tagama.
