Borrowed from Malay cuka (soured wine, vinegar), ultimately from Sanskrit चुक्र (cukra, tamarind tree; vinegar made by acetous fermentation). Compare Ilocano suka, Pangasinan tuka, Tagalog suka, Bikol Central suka, Cebuano suka, and Maranao soka'.
