[edit]From Suisse. The meaning "guard" is a metonymic reference to the practice of hiring Swiss mercenaries to serve as guards at European courts. The meaning "chipmunk" derives from the rodent's stripes, reminiscent of the striped uniform of the Swiss Guard.
