Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic стрькъ (strĭkŭ), from Proto-Slavic *stьrkъ. Compare Serbo-Croatian štȓk, Macedonian штрк (štrk), Bulgarian щъ́ркел (štǎ́rkel), Aromanian stircu, also Albanian shtërg.
