From Old Danish sænckæ, from Old Norse *sænkja (east) / søkkva (west), from Proto-Germanic *sankwijaną, cognate with German senken. Causative of Proto-Germanic *sinkwaną (“to sink”) (cf. Danish synke (“to sink”)).
