From Old French ruissel, from Vulgar Latin *rivuscellum (brook, stream), from Latin *rīvusculum (creek, rivulet) + -ellum (-elle: forming diminutives), from rīvus (rivulet) + -usculum (-cule: forming diminutives). Compare Italian ruscello.
