From Malay renang, from Proto-Malayic *rənaŋ. Adelaar (1992) proposes a derivation from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *naŋuy via these stages: *maʀ-naŋuy > *mAr-naŋi > *mArənaŋ-i > berenang, from which the verb was derived.
