From Proto-Hmong *qæwᶜ (“egg”). Cognate with Proto-Mien *kləuᶜ (“id”),[1] as well as Old Chinese 卵 (OC *ɡ·roːlʔ, *ɡ·roːnʔ, “egg”);[2] note also similarities to Proto-Tai *qraj (“id”), whence Lao ໄຂ່ (khai, “id”) and Thai ไข่ (kài, “id”).
