From a Vulgar Latin root *pūrōnium, from Latin pūs, pūris, from Proto-Italic *pūs, from Proto-Indo-European *púH-os ~ *púH-es-os, from *puH-. Compare Aromanian pronjiu. Alternatively from a root *pur, derived from this Latin root, and with the suffix -oi added within proto-Romanian.
