From Middle Dutch priem, from Proto-Germanic *preumaz (compare Low German Preem, German Pfriem), alteration of *preunaz, from Proto-Indo-European *brewn- (compare Lithuanian briaunà ‘edge’, Albanian brez ‘belt, girdle’).
