Borrowed from Late Latin praefixum, from Latin praefixus, past participle of praefīgō (I (fix, fasten, set up) in front”, “I fix on the (end, extremity)) (from prae- (before) + fīgō (I fix”, “I fasten”, “I affix)). By surface analysis, pre- +‎ fixo.
