Borrowed from Ukrainian оселе́дець (oselédecʹ), from Old Ruthenian селе́децъ, селе́дець (selédecʹ, selédecʹ), from Old East Slavic сельдь (selĭdĭ), from earlier *сьлдь (*sĭldĭ), from Old Norse síld. Doublet of śledź (herring).
