[edit]Inherited from Ottoman Turkish نرده (nerde, “where, in what place”)[1] (alternatively نرهده (nerede)), locative of Ottoman Turkish نره (nere, “what place, what part”), from نه (ne, “what”) + ارا (ara, “space or place between two things”), equivalent to ne + ara,[2] from Proto-Turkic *nē- (“what”).[3] Cognate with Turkmen nirede.
