Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from English nylon, genericized from the registered brand name "Nylon", a family of synthetic polymers manufactured by the DuPont company. DuPont stated that the letters "nyl" were arbitrary and the "on" was copied from the suffixes of other fibers such as cotton and Rayon.
