From Proto-Celtic *mrogis (compare Welsh bro), from Proto-Indo-European *morǵ- (frontier, border). Cognate with Latin margo (border, edge), Proto-Germanic *markō (border, region), Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬀 (marəza, frontier).
