Etymology

Compound of mā- (combinatory form of -mēy (hand)) +‎ kwi (to take) +‎ -l (passive nominalization). Compare Classical Nahuatl mācuīlli (five). From Proto-Nahuan *ma:kwil, from Proto-Uto-Aztecan *manniki. Probably cognate with Yaqui mamni (five) and Shoshone manegite (five).
